YouTube won’t cast. Using iPad and Chromecast, but casting doesn’t work.

Casting video from iPhone to TV, YouTube, Chromecast

You would like to watch something that is on your iPad, iPad Pro, iPhone or MacBook on your big TV.

Normally that’s very easy to do: Just connect your TV to a Google Chromecast, Apple TV, Roku or Amazon Fire Stick or any other streaming device. Now you start whatever video or photo app on your phone and push the little cast button.

This opens a menu that looks like the following

Cast Youtube

Now you choose your Chromecast or Apple TV or Roku, etc. and you can stream the content to your TV.

Unfortunately many people are having problems with streaming / casting to Chromecast. The problem is that your Chromecast (or other streaming device) is not registered to the same access point. As soon as this happens Chromecast will not show up as a casting device and you cannot watch it on your TV.

How does this happen?

Often people use several access points like two Netgear Orbi or other WiFi repeaters or Google Mesh, etc.

Now it occurs that one of your devices is registered to the access point in your living room (e.g. your Chromecast) and the other one (e.g. your phone) is registered to a different access point in your dining room – and that’s the problem!!

For whatever reason, Chromecast does not accept connections from different access points, even if your Wifi mesh network is using just one single name (or SSID).

If you are using one single WiFi network name (with more than one access point) it looks like both devices, Chromecast and iPhone, are using the same WiFi network, but actually they are connected to different access points.

What’s the solution?

You have to connect both devices to the same access point. The easiest way is to switch off any other WiFi access point in your house and wait a few seconds, and keep only one online. Then switch off your phone and TV (where the Chromecast is connected) for a few seconds.

Now you switch on your phone and TV again. If there is actually no other access point available you will see that you are now able to cast to your TV by using Chromecast.

Of course this is not a permanent solution but now you know that your Chromecast is working and that there isn’t a different problem.

The only thing you need to do right now is to find a way to connect your phone and your Chromecast to the same access point all the time.

List of apps with Google Cast support

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following is a partial list of apps with Google Cast support, and the platforms on which each can run. The first Google Cast receiver released was Google‘s Chromecast in July 2013; a digital media player in the form of an HDMI dongle, the device streams media wirelessly via Wi-Fi after a selection is made through a supported mobile or web app, such as those listed below. Unofficial Google Cast receivers followed, before Google released a second official receiver, the Nexus Player, in November 2014.

For information on Chromecast’s app history and software development kit, see Chromecast software development kit and compatible apps.

* = PC-compatible (computers running Windows, macOS, Linux, or Chrome OS) web apps cited here require the Chromebrowser, with the Google Cast extension[1] installed, and have support for casting built into the website itself, without the need for “tab casting.”

And then there is this:

Make sure you power the Chromecast device with the provided power supply into an open electrical outlet, not using a USB input on your TV or other device. Your Apple device, Chromecast device and Wi-Fi Router should be within ~15 feet (4 meters) of each other. Conduct a factory data reset on your Chromecast device.Mar 11, 2019
